Deadlock by Sara Paretsky

A fun book about the shipping industry in the Great Lakes (and a murder of a hockey player).

I requested this book from the library, and lucky for me the copy they supplied was in a large print edition making it a quick easy read for me.

I am not a big fan of murder mysteries because I often have trouble following the plot - the whodunits and whys. I often get the same lost feeling I have when I look at a trigonometry book filled with calculations. The plot in the story was fairly easy for me to follow.

There were too many murders to suit me, especially of Anna the cook on the ship. That poor woman had absolutely nothing to do with the crooks and her death was glossed over like a gum wrapper wadded up and tossed. And the other crew members of that ship who died when it was blown up. A total lack of caring about lives that could and were lost bothered me. Those poor souls had nothing to do with the crimes being committed.

I didn't like the fact that Grafalk decided to go down with his boat and was not hauled in to get the justice he deserved for all those deaths. And after all hose deaths and attempts on her life Vic sits in a chair and pretty much says "oh well".

The book would make a good movie for action fans. I am not sure I would read another book by the author. I wanted to see justice done and I didn't feel it was.

This is one of the books in a series that I enjoy. Since this one dealt with the Great Lakes region and hockey, I really liked reading it. I go by streaks and currently I am on an "investigator" streak- so murder mysteries and other mysteries being investigated by cops, PIs, medical examiners, whatever.

I agree with the additional deaths. I've noticed that in the shows we've been watching and books there is often additional deaths that are skimmed over since they aren't directly related to the main characters. In this case, I think it was meant to show the lengths the antagonists would go to in order to keep the secret.

On the lack of justice, this is also all too often the case in these types of movies and books, but it didn't bother me in this one. I feel like Vic was satisfied with the outcome and since the book is about her...

I am sorry you didn't enjoy it! I guess we can't win with all of them.
