"The Robber Bride" by Margaret Atwood
I haven't actually finished Freakonomics yet, but will either today or tomorrow. Since everyone else has already finished it, I thought I'd open this new post for you. I've heard good things about this book from friends and academics- let's hope we share their opinion!

I just bought the book this weekend, and if i wasn't busy mending clothes - yes I sew - I would have started it. Hoping to knock it out over the long weekend.

Differences Between Men and Women?
In "A Room of One's One" (1928), Virgina Woolf posits that men and women not only write about different subjects but write differently. She argues that women use more suggestion and inuendo in their writing, while men are more straightforward. Do you agree with this?

Chocolat, by Joann Harris
I guess it is my pick again. I decided to move to a more contemporary author and book (since Joy asked me to stay away from anything "Shirley"esque). I read this book soon after it first came out and I recall enjoying it. Hopefully my tastes haven't changed!

Happy Birthday!
AMA Book Club completed 1 full year on Saturday, 9/6/09. In 1 year we've read 15 novels (I'm of course counting all those Sherlock Holmes stories as just 1 book), and I'm glad to say that many of them were not books I ever would have picked on my own. Along the way I've also read several others that were recommended to me, and I'm very grateful to Melissa for suggesting that we start a little club.

Lisa See, Shanghai Girls
Angie's pick. I'm only about halfway through Shirley but Melissa's itching for a new book!
I heard about this book on NPR and thought it sounded like an interesting read.

Priorities of Literature
Should literatures only priority be to tell a good story or should it also include social consciousness?

Peter Pan
Melissa's next pick. I've watched the movies but never read the book! Fantasy should be a fun change.

Alistair MacLean "The Satan Bug"
Angie's pick. Hope it lives up to Athabasca and Ice Station Zebra.
Originally published under pseudonym Ian Stuart. If you have trouble finding it I'll pick something else.

Hot Rock
Joy's first pick, in homage to Donald Westlake, who recently passed away, THE HOT ROCK. Hope you enjoy it.

Nathaniel Hawthorne, "House of the Seven Gables"
Melissa's most recent pick. I had mentioned comparing Hawthorne to Melville, since they were close friends, so here is our opportunity. Let's hope it is better than Moby Dick!

Sara Gruen, Water for Elephants
Angie's third pick, recommended by her sister. Here's to the circus!

Kazuo Ishiguro, The Remains of the Day
Angie's 2.5 pick.
Why the hell not? The other book was so short, I'm halfway through this one already.
