This book for me was very moving. The author gave emotional depth to the characters. I was glad Werner was given the redeeming quality of kindness, that he had not totally descended into the depths of war cruelty. Most of the main characters are so young. The author brought out the reality of how many young people were pushed into that war. I liked that the author let us know what happened to the characters, except for a definite knowing of the life end of the father. He also did not tell us what happened to the diamond. After Werner's kindness I found what happened to him very sad.
Overall, I really liked this book. I thought it was well-written, and, as you say, B, gave emotional depth to the characters. However, WERNER DIES! What!?! After all that? And what happens to the diamond? Finally, the chapters were too short. I read by the chapter, so it took me a long time to finish it because the chapters were so short.
I did like finding out what happened to the other characters, even Jutta and Frederick. I felt like I got to know them and liked the closure of seeing how their lives ended (even if it wasn't a happy ending).
I did have a little trouble keeping track of chronology as the book moved around in time. I can see why it did, but, at the same time, it made it difficult to follow at times.

All in all, a good book. Now on to the next!
