SACD's Sherlock Holmes- "The Five Orange Pips"

A recommended reading for those of us who will not be satisfied with the required reading. Angie read if because the title sounded intersting.

My first question- what are orange pips? The seeds? I was hoping this story would clear that up, but it did not.

Second question- what is the connection between orange pips and the KKK?

Final question- we never do find out what started the whole killing spree, do we?

i beleive that orange pips are, indeed, the seeds. Though how you would know they were orane pips and not lemon pips I'm not sure.

Apparently the orange pips were a way for the KKK to unobtrusedly notify someone that they were marked for elimination? First I had ever heard of it, but Holmes hasn't been wrong yet so I'll trust him.

I guess we have to assume that the captain and shipmates were at one point high up in the Klan and very anxious to retrieve all evidence that they were once involved in it.

All in all not one of my favorite stories -- I think maybe it would have gone over better at its original publishing date, assuming that the KKK was not that well known in Europe at that time.

But why does the KKK use 5 orange pips. Notice it is not 4 orange pips or 3 lime seeds. There must be a reason. Maybe sometime today I will look it up. I'll let you know if I do.

Overall, I wasn't too happy with this story either. I liked your choice of the "Naval Treaty" much better.

I really liked this story. I think because it gave a European look at the rise and fall of the KKK. I know that the story was not true about the reasons but it is a new and interesting way to look at it. As far as the orange pips are concerned they were according to actual accounts the KKK did use these types of messages to ward off potential threats. They were regional signes as it would make sense that the sign in Florida was orange seeds or pips. I really liked how Holmes deduced the culprets by going over shipping records. I never would have thought of that. I did not like the ending but I guess those men got it in the end.
