I love that Holmes is so clueless about the sports world. So clueless, in fact, that he doesn't even poor Mr. Staunton in his files and clippings.
"I didn't think there was a soul in England who didn't know Godfrey Staunton, the crack three-quarter... Good Lord! Mr. Holmes, where have you lived?"
I thought the way Holmes tricked the telegraph office was pure genius. I only wish I knew the other 6 ways he had in mind!
Also - quite brilliant pouring a strong scent over the doctors wheels then tracking it with a dog. I wonder if that would work with a car?
Also, loved this passage, especially the sleep/waking phrase: "For years I had gradually weaned him from that drug mania which had threatened once to check his remarkable career. Now I knew that under ordinary conditions he no longer craved for this artificial stimulus, but I was well aware that the fiend was not dead, but sleeping; and I have known that the sleep was a light one and the waking near when in periods of idleness I have seen the drawn look upon Holmes's ascetic face, and the brooding of his deep-set and inscrutable eyes."
So, speaking of clueless of the sports world... they are playing rubgy?
I also thought the way that Holmes tricked the telegraphy office was genius. Do you think something like that would work today? Probably not.
I am sure the scent trick would work with the car, the problem would be that a car can go so much further so much quicker than a buggy that you probably wouldn't get far with a dog tracking it before you or the dog were exhausted!
I would have to say that this was not one of my favorites. Too much sport, I think! :-)
